Hooked on Cricket

NZCPA | Events |  Hooked on Cricket

The NZCPA is delighted to work with the New Zealand Community Trust to deliver the Hooked on Cricket programme.

The NZCPA launched this initiative in 2005 with the purpose of introducing cricket and its players to new communities. This was coupled with a desire from current players to give something back to the community through a meaningful programme.

The New Zealand Community Trust has generously lent its support to the programme and this will ensure the continual development of what is a unique and effective community initiative.

Hooked on Cricket 2011 - Wellington

The NZCT Hooked on Cricket programme recently began in South Auckland and Porirua (Wellington). The programme then moves on Waitara/New Plymouth, Rotorua, Linwood/Aranui (Christchurch) and South/ North Dunedin. The NZCPA run programme is in its sixth year and continues to focus on taking the game and it’s players directly to communities where there has been little or no cricket programmes.

Born out of the programme in recent years, schools have now set up cricket programmes where before there has been none and areas such as junior cricket in Rotorua and Waitara are beginning to grow again. These broader developments are coupled with some children, who were offered scholarships through the programme, going on to not only continue playing cricket but making provincial representative teams.

Wellington Firebirds captain Grant Elliott attended the coaching session in Porirua and enjoyed working with the kids and helping them develop their cricket skills. On completion of the skills sessions around the country the focus will then shift to the tournament days where the 48 schools involved will compete in local knock out tournaments where their team will be captained by a local provincial player. Scholarship offers and broader funding is then offered on the back of the coaching sessions and tournament days.
